Autofollow is a waste of time on Twitter

I was using TweetLater to autofollow people who followed me, mainly because I’m lazy, but also because I haven’t got time to check out the people who follow me.

What autofollow did was just make me a spam magnet.  My twitter feed just became a waste of time to look at, because I was sifting through piles and piles of junk.  There was the occasional gem - a new real person who was actually interesting to follow, but for the mst part, it did nothing useful for me.

A few days ago I shut off my Autofollow feature, and started using a few twitter spam blocking tools to cut the spammers out of my account.

Now when I go to my twitter feed, it feels like I’ve come back to a group of long lost friends.  People, whose tweets I enjoy reading, and a community that I like being a part of.

I should note that every single person I stopped following dropped me in half a second.  People say that it really isn’t about the number of people who follow you on twitter - you don’t quite believe it when someone says it, something doesn’t quite add up when you hear it, but I’m telling you developing quality relationships with quality people is far more worthwhile than going for quantity.
