An observation: The new “social” internet is not about one way communication. To many people are trying one way, particularly with Twitter, and I’m fairly certain it’s not really working for them. Auto follow may have worked when no one knew about twitter, so a DM from someone was actually special, but now, from most people’s point of view, it’s just annoying.
I’ve replied to every single Auto DM that I received from following people in my target market, and at this point I have had no responses to my message requesting some help. You can’t open a dialog with someone and then walk away. YOU HAVE TO PARTICIPATE! This is the one single thing that separates the winners from the loosers in twitter marketing.
The reason many people don’t “get” twitter, is they don’t participate. They tell people what they had for breakfast, and then walk away.
So, my big twitter tip today is to listen to the people you are following, and then respond appropriately to what they are saying. PARTICIATE in the conversation and make some new friends in the process.
If you don’t have the courtesy to listen to what your customer is saying, why should the have the courtesy to listen to what you say?
